Overview
The Record
Aestra is the second planet of the Vyian system and the one closest in scale to the worlds upon which open-air life might ordinarily be expected. From orbit it appears serene and luminous, its entire surface hidden beneath layered clouds of cream, gold, and muted amber. Nothing visible from above suggests the violence below.
Pressure and temperature rise sharply beneath the upper atmosphere. Corrosive compounds fill the lower clouds, while powerful winds circle the planet at speeds that make controlled descent difficult. Lightning moves through several atmospheric layers at once, and the greatest storm systems extend across distances wider than the Great Moons of Oranth.
Nearly everything known of Aestra has been learned through orbital surveys and descent probes built to survive only briefly. Few have reached the surface intact, and none has continued transmitting for long. Large regions remain poorly mapped beneath the cloud cover, but no settlement, ruin, or other artificial structure has ever been verified.
In Oranthian tradition, Aestra is the Veiled World: beautiful from a distance, deadly upon approach, and unwilling to reveal what it keeps beneath its clouds. It appears in old teachings as a warning against mistaking serenity for welcome, and in later stories as the place where truths too dangerous for the inhabited moons were hidden from sight.

Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Civilization Status
- Uninhabited
No government claims sovereignty over Aestra. Scholarly institutions from several moons maintain orbital surveys and dispatch descent probes, but their presence is treated as observation rather than occupation, granting no right to the atmosphere or the world below.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter12,900 km
- Mass1.03 Earth masses
- Gravity1 g
Aestra’s atmosphere is dominated by carbon dioxide and layered with reflective clouds rich in sulfur compounds. Electrical storms move continuously through its upper and middle depths. Radar and gravitational surveys indicate that volcanic plains, elevated plateaus, and weathered impact basins lie beneath the permanent cloud cover, though little of the surface has been mapped in detail.

Neither Vya nor Veo is visible from Aestra’s surface. Day arrives as a diffuse amber glow through the cloud layers, then fades gradually into night without a distinct sunrise or sunset. Above the clouds, the passage of the two stars is much clearer: each casts its own shadow, and their overlapping light produces regular cycles of doubled shadows and stellar eclipses.
Culture
The Twofold
Aestra is associated with the Gloam because its beauty conceals a world that cannot be clearly seen or safely approached. The connection remains symbolic, however; no Gloam manifestation, practitioner, or artifact has ever been confirmed within its atmosphere.
Travel
Travel Notes
Orbital travel is possible, but atmospheric descent is extremely dangerous. Most expeditions rely on expendable probes or high-altitude platforms.
