Overview
The Record
The Crownless Keep can be occupied but not inherited. Docks, galleries, and defensive works have been restored within a dark irregular moon, while sealed passages and unsafe systems leave much of the fortress beyond the wardens’ control.
The wardens govern the districts they can keep pressurized, supplied, and connected. Their authority covers access, repairs, and immediate defense; it does not settle ownership. Realms and old houses preserve incompatible claims, but none possesses a record or device accepted by the others as proof.
Gloam practice governs sealed chambers, lost routes, and records whose context cannot be recovered. Dawn practitioners reveal workable systems and interpret surviving machinery, allowing another section to reopen without pretending that function establishes title.
The Keep’s limitation is the same as its attraction. Every restored dock makes it more useful, while every unopened district may contain evidence that overturns the present arrangement. The wardens can hold the occupied fortress together; they cannot crown an owner.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Political Status
- Contested
- Civilization Status
- Inhabited
- Heraldic Standing
- No Unified Mark
Temporary wardens govern the occupied districts, issue access orders, maintain life support, and organize immediate defense. Their jurisdiction rests on custody and operation, not ownership of the entire fortress. Multiple realms and houses maintain incompatible historical claims, and no recognized power has proved a superior title.
Recovered devices appear throughout the Keep, but none is accepted as its legitimate modern crest. Warden and claimant marks identify present organizations only.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter780 km
- Mass0.0000587 Earth masses
- Gravity0.03 g
The exterior is airless. Restored districts maintain breathable pressure behind compartmented seals, while unopened sections may hold vacuum, toxic residue, unstable mixtures, or isolated environments. Every newly entered district is tested before its systems are joined to the occupied Keep.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order655
- Orbital Radius9,800,000 km
- Orbital Period114.44 days
- Rotation19.6 hours
- Inclination6.4 degrees
- Eccentricity0.053
The Crownless Keep rotates every 19.6 standard hours and is not tidally locked. Oranth crosses the view from restored towers as the exterior moves through light and darkness, but occupied districts follow garrison time because sealed work, watches, and life-support cycles do not depend on the surface day.
Culture
The Twofold
Gloam practitioners keep unsafe chambers closed, preserve disputed records, and mark where knowledge has been lost rather than merely hidden. Dawn practitioners reveal functioning systems and interpret surviving machinery. Reopening a district requires both kinds of judgment and confers no ownership by itself.
Travel
Travel Notes
Obtain permission from the current wardens and dock only at the berth named in the clearance. An ancestral claim, recovered device, or invitation from a claimant house does not authorize entry. Visitors remain within occupied districts unless a warden assigns them to a surveyed expedition; crossing a sealed boundary without approval is treated as a threat to the whole Keep.
