Abider

Carried through

An uncommon Gloam practitioner who carries a person through cold, depth, long darkness, or grief without claiming to heal or extend life.

uncommonRarity, not rank. A practitioner is one thing for life.

An Abider carries a person through conditions that should break them: cold, depth, long darkness, or grief. The work preserves endurance where recovery is unavailable. A Mender is credited with restoring a body; an Abider keeps that body and mind going until the unendurable interval has passed.

Mordane’s mining houses place Abiders within a Gloam tradition of guarded strength and ancestral obligation. Caldrin’s custodians treat carrying memory through ruin as a sacred duty and regard the practitioner as its living expression. Neither reading turns the role into medical authority or promises that what survives will be unchanged.

Deep crews on Kharad and winter travelers on Koravel hire Abiders for more immediate reasons. The practitioner is not thought to extend a life, shorten the dangerous passage, or remove the conditions causing harm. The claimed result is narrower: making a stretch of cold, depth, darkness, or grief survivable.
