Kharad

The Deep Forge

The volcanic industrial moon that controls every permitted descent into the Deep, supplying the system from defended foundries, mines, and low-gravity shipyards.

Overview

The Record

Kharad makes the Deep reachable. Its 180 million people inhabit sealed foundry-cities, protected basins, and subterranean works on a volcanic moon held close to Oranth. Low gravity lets mines descend farther and orbital yards assemble larger hulls than most worlds could support. Nearly every surviving landscape has been assigned to extraction, defense, transport, or the management of fire.

The moon’s foundries refine ores from Othryn and Mordane alongside material raised from Oranth’s atmosphere. Its yards build and maintain the scoop vessels, diving craft, storm equipment, and reinforced hulls required for that work. The result moves outward as ships, machinery, refined metal, and industrial feedstock. The Deep itself remains inside Oranth, but every permitted route into it begins in Kharadi hands.

The Directorate governs from Dhorak through operational permission. Directors who have run mines, foundries, shipyards, and descent systems occupy its chairs; one of them holds the office of Overseer for as long as that director holds the descent. Velyrian interests financed much of the infrastructure and retain contractual access. They do not command the corridors, assign the crews, or issue the permits.

Kharad’s Gloam belongs to crews who endure sealed depths, toxic works, and the lower reaches of the Deep. The routes into Oranth are Dawn work. Licensed Summoners reveal temporary passages through the storms and guide vessels when instruments fail, making a Dawn practice indispensable to a Gloam moon. Kharad resolves the tension administratively: any practitioner able to affect a mine, yard, military facility, or descent route works under regulation.

Kharad’s power is formidable and conditional. Rethis supplies forecasts, Othryn and Mordane supply ore, Velyrian capital remains embedded in the works, and radiation, magnetic weather, volcanism, or a failed corridor can halt operations. Kharad cannot remove those dependencies. It can decide who moves through the system they sustain, which is why the industrial heart of the Grasp is also one of its principal political powers.

Kharad is a sovereign Major Moon governed from Dhorak by the Kharadi Directorate. Its chairs belong to directors who have run the mines, foundries, shipyards, and descent systems they regulate. One chair holds the office of Overseer and with it operational command of the descent; the office is vacated the moment the corridor stops answering. The Directorate can issue or deny the permits without which the Deep cannot be worked. Velyrian interests financed much of the infrastructure and retain contractual access, but those contracts do not authorize them to command crews, assign routes, or open a descent window.

Kharad’s wider sphere is industrial and formal. Mordane is its vassal realm: the mining aristocracy retains local estates in exchange for mineral quotas, military access, and loyalty. Rethis is a chartered technical dependency whose observatories provide the atmospheric, magnetic, and storm data required by Deep operations; Kharad funds and protects the towers. Kharad represents both in system-wide industrial and Deep matters. The Shortfall demonstrated the reach of that authority when Kharad closed its corridors to Mordane over a charge audit and every other power in the Grasp followed rather than test the closure.

Kharad depends on Othryn for much of its ore, on Rethis for forecasts, on Mordane for quotas and crews, and on infrastructure carrying Velyrian capital. None of those relationships transfers command of the Deep, which remains an operation inside Oranth’s atmosphere. Kharad observes the Binding and accepts Serath’s neutrality, but neither institution directs its production or convoy discipline. Its political leverage is simple: a cargo denied a Kharadi route does not descend.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter4,080 km
  • Mass0.039 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.38 g

Kharad has a thin, toxic atmosphere of volcanic gases, sulfur compounds, mineral ash, and industrial emissions. It is not breathable without filtration and protective equipment. Tidal heating drives frequent eruptions that renew the atmosphere and reshape active rifts, while sealed foundry-cities, protected basins, and subterranean complexes hold most of the moon’s 180 million people. Beyond them lie basalt plains, volcanic ranges, and exposed mineral fields. From approach, the moon appears dark and metallic, crossed by red fissures and the lights of industrial districts.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order20
  • Orbital Radius420,000 km
  • Orbital Period1.015 days
  • Rotation24.36 hours
  • Inclination0.06 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.001

Kharad is tidally locked to Oranth, rotating once during each 1.015-standard-day orbit so that the gas giant remains fixed above one hemisphere. Oranth’s movement around Vya and Veo gives Kharad a sunrise-to-sunrise cycle of about 24.42 standard hours, close to the civic day used on many inhabited worlds. Most orbits also carry Kharad through Oranth’s shadow for roughly one to two hours. Foundries use the regular eclipse as a scheduling marker, but launches and Deep operations remain subject to radiation, magnetic disturbances, volcanic activity, and the state of Oranth’s storms.

Culture

The Twofold

Gloam practice is embedded in the work of miners, subterranean crews, and Deep-divers who must endure sealed depths and conditions no unaccompanied person could survive. Dawn governs the routes, construction, and coordinated labor that make that endurance useful.

Licensed Summoners reveal temporary descent routes through Oranth’s storms, identify passages between dangerous atmospheric layers, and guide vessels when instruments become unreliable. Kharad depends on this Dawn work without allowing it to set the terms of a Gloam institution.

Practitioners whose work could affect a mine, shipyard, military facility, or descent corridor require Kharadi authorization and remain subject to operational command.

Travel

Travel Notes

Kharad is the controlled gateway to the Deep. All descent traffic uses Kharadi corridors, stations, permits, crews, or supply networks, and unauthorized approaches to Deep infrastructure are treated as security threats. Radiation shielding is required near the moon; magnetic interference, charged particles, Oranthian storms, volcanic activity, and communication failures can close a window after it has been assigned. Most passenger and commercial vessels dock first at defended orbital stations, then transfer to sealed surface ports if their business requires descent. Approach angles and convoy positions are assigned precisely because the Binding never settled whether a ship under thrust is itself a weapon. Deviation is logged and penalized before intent is considered. Kharad’s yards send vessels, refined metals, machinery, and Deep-derived materials throughout the system, but access to the operation that makes them possible remains a permit, not a public route.
