Serath

The Pale Sanctuary

A sovereign sanctuary moon whose independent sacred communities teach the Twofold, grant protective covenants, and preserve neutral ground within the industrial Grasp.

Overview

The Record

Serath makes neutrality out of sacred difference. Its 130 million people inhabit pilgrimage cities, protected basins, salt-sea shores, and ancient precincts across a luminous moon of white mineral flats. Large regions remain sparsely settled so that roads, springs, and sanctuaries can be approached on their own terms rather than absorbed into continuous development.

No sacred community outranks another. They govern from their own precincts, send statements to Witness Hall to be recorded, and never assemble in a common chamber that one community would have to own. The Concord neither legislates nor rules territory. It grants covenants, extending Serath’s protection to a sanctuary, order, road, or station without turning the protected institution into a Serathi possession.

That structure makes Serath a principal center of Twofold teaching. Students can study revelation and concealment, action and stillness, memory and renewal without accepting one community’s doctrine as the moon’s official position. Summoners guide paths across the flats that appear under particular combinations of light, tide, eclipse, and mineral haze. Whether every such route is supernatural, environmental, or both remains disputed.

Serath’s sacred communities carry influence among peoples who share little other political allegiance. Pilgrims, scholars, and diplomats meet there because Kharad, Othryn, and the powers of the Embrace do not control the ground. Independent custodians regulate access to their own sanctuaries, while Serath’s sovereign seal applies only where the communities have agreed to use it.

The moon sits inside the industrial Grasp and declines to take a share of the Deep traffic passing near its orbit. That restraint sustains its neutrality and limits its material power. Serath can protect a covenant, host a negotiation, or close a sacred road; it cannot command the industries and armies whose representatives come there to speak.

Sovereign Seal

Serath is a sovereign Major Moon governed by independent sacred communities. No community has precedence, and none may bind the others from its own precinct. Statements are carried to Witness Hall and recorded; the communities do not meet in a common chamber. Serath’s sovereign seal is used only where they have agreed to act together.

The Concord does not legislate or administer territory. It grants covenants that place sanctuaries, orders, roads, and stations under Serath’s protection while leaving their internal government intact. Local custodians retain authority over access and practice. Saint’s Rest is protected in this manner, not governed as a Serathi outpost.

Serath’s neutrality depends on refusing material leverage available to it. The moon takes no share of the Deep traffic passing near its orbit and does not trade sacred access for industrial privilege. That restraint lets it host negotiations trusted by Kharad, Othryn, and powers beyond the Grasp, but it also leaves Serath without the industrial or military reach those powers possess.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter6,400 km
  • Mass0.14 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.56 g

Serath has a dry, breathable atmosphere at low pressure. Fine salt and mineral particles create luminous haze, while intense reflection from white flats requires eye and skin protection outside settlements. Most communities occupy protected shorelines, freshwater springs, or elevated ground above seasonal flooding.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order75
  • Orbital Radius1,200,000 km
  • Orbital Period4.903 days
  • Rotation117.67 hours
  • Inclination0.19 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.0015

Serath rotates once during each 4.903-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth, which remains fixed above one hemisphere. Its sunrise-to-sunrise cycle lasts about 119 standard hours, with nearly sixty hours of light followed by a similar darkness. Light warms the shallow seas and increases mineral haze; darkness cools the flats and promotes salt crystallization. Most orbits include an eclipse of roughly two to three hours, used by many communities to divide the long light period.

Culture

The Twofold

Serath teaches the Twofold to students from across the system because its sacred communities do not require one interpretation to outrank the others. Traditions study movement between revelation and concealment, action and stillness, remembrance and renewal. Summoners guide routes across salt flats that become passable under particular combinations of light, tide, eclipse, and haze. Observers disagree on how much is environmental and how much is Twofold practice; Serath preserves the disagreement.

Travel

Travel Notes

  1. Arrive through a designated orbital port and continue to the settlement or pilgrimage route named in the clearance. A port admission does not authorize entry to every sanctuary. Local custodians may close sacred roads or observation sites independently.

  2. Carry eye protection, water, thermal layers, and a current route schedule. Mineral glare and haze reduce visibility during the long light; extended darkness, sudden winds, and seasonal flooding close other routes. Cross-flat journeys require an approved guide where the custodians specify one.
