Othryn

The Unbowed

Othryn’s crown controls the fortified mines and royal ports that supply the Grasp with ore while keeping Kharadi buyers outside its sovereignty.

Overview

The Record

Othryn supplies the ores and rare minerals that feed foundries across the Grasp. Its 95 million people live among immense mountain chains in fortified valleys, mountainside cities, and subterranean settlements where stone protects against thin air, hard winds, and attack. Mines descend from the holds into mineral country whose maps are guarded almost as closely as its workings.

Raw metal is only the beginning of the trade. Othryni furnaces grow blade cores in laminated ceramic and seeded crystal, then test them against plate made by the same houses. The Binding permits the work because an edge contributes no force of its own. Kharad remains the largest buyer of Othryn’s ore and specialized materials, but Othryn refuses Kharadi ownership of the mines that produce them.

House Skarn has ruled from Dorrath Hold for about three centuries. The crown controls the high ports, the Iron Stair, customs, export prices, ore quotas, armies, and every warrant issued in Othryn’s name. Mining houses retain their workings, wealth, and old privileges; they no longer bargain independently with Kharad. The kingdom was built to prevent outside contracts from acquiring the holds one at a time.

Gloam practice belongs to miners, tunnel crews, scouts, and deep communities that endure dangerous workings and keep their locations within the owning house. Descriers read stone before a cut is opened, Summoners reveal routes through impassable country, and Sextons identify galleries sealed by earlier keepers. Dawn is visible in public oaths and displayed craftsmanship; carrying a settlement through the long darkness remains Gloam work.

Othryn’s power rests on controlling what leaves the mountains, not on matching Kharad’s industrial scale. It needs Kharadi machinery and markets, while Kharad needs Othryni material. Neither dependence grants authority over the other. The crown can close a road, withhold a quota, or deny a royal port; it cannot turn mineral leverage into foundries it does not possess.

Othryn is a sovereign Major Moon ruled by House Skarn from Dorrath Hold. The kingdom is about three centuries old. Before its formation, the strongholds were separately sovereign and increasingly tied to Kharad through individual mineral contracts. The crown ended that process by taking control of external trade and denying foreign buyers a direct political route into the holds.

The king controls export prices, ore quotas, royal customs, the Iron Stair, the high ports, the armies, and every warrant issued in Othryn’s name. Mining houses retain their workings, wealth, household authority, and old privileges, but they may not negotiate independent terms with Kharad. Othryn’s sovereign seal carries public authority beyond the individual signs of its holds and houses.

Tharos is Othryn’s sworn martial vassal. Tharic commanders retain control of their internal forces and fortress-cities; Othryn sets the wider obligations, provides strategic protection, and represents Tharos in system-level agreements. The crown does not govern Tharos day to day.

Kharad is Othryn’s largest customer and depends on its ore and rare minerals, while Othryn depends on Kharadi machinery and markets. Neither dependency confers jurisdiction. Othryn can set quotas, close royal ports, and defend its mines, but it cannot reproduce Kharad’s industrial scale.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter7,100 km
  • Mass0.21 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.68 g

Othryn has a cool, dry, breathable atmosphere at lower pressure than the largest inhabited moons. Air across the highest ranges is dangerously thin and requires supplemental oxygen outside protected settlements. Most people live in sheltered valleys, mountainside excavations, or subterranean complexes; powerful pass winds, cold exposure, and fine metallic dust are the principal surface hazards.

  • Orbital Order50
  • Orbital Radius850,000 km
  • Orbital Period2.923 days
  • Rotation70.15 hours
  • Inclination0.12 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.002

Othryn rotates once during each 2.923-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth, which remains fixed above one hemisphere. Its sunrise-to-sunrise cycle lasts about 70.6 standard hours, dividing work between roughly thirty-five hours of starlight and thirty-five of darkness. Most orbits include an eclipse of about two hours; settlements use it to coordinate mining shifts and transport. Magnetic activity produces polar auroras and occasional communication failures, but does not alter the cycle itself.

Culture

The Twofold

Gloam practice belongs to miners, tunnel crews, scouts, and deep communities that endure dangerous workings and keep the location of the deepest seams within the owning house. Descriers read stone before a cut is opened. Summoners reveal routes through impassable terrain, and Sextons identify galleries sealed by earlier keepers when crews must enter old workings. Dawn is more public, attached to oaths, defensive unity, and displayed craftsmanship; carrying a settlement through the long darkness remains Gloam work.

Travel

Travel Notes

  1. Arrive through the royal orbital port assigned to the destination hold. Most passengers transfer to smaller craft rated for thin air, narrow valleys, and strong mountain winds; an orbital clearance does not authorize entry into another house’s mining territory.

  2. Surface travel follows fortified roads, passes, tunnels, and subterranean lines. Storms, landslides, seismic activity, or royal order can close any of them. Carry supplemental oxygen for high routes and obtain a local guide where the receiving hold requires one. Ore traffic to Kharad receives regular customs handling, but no commercial schedule overrides a closure.
