Dorrath Hold

Fortress

Othryn’s greatest mountainside stronghold and the royal seat where House Skarn turns the old holds’ separate power into one kingdom’s warrants and quotas.

Overview

The Record

Dorrath Hold is where Othryn’s old mountain powers are required to become one kingdom. Representatives of the holds come to its great hall because House Skarn summons them. Royal decisions establish external trade, ore quotas, customs, export prices, military obligations, and warrants that apply across the moon whether every affected house was present or not. Tharic officers attend when the matter touches the vassal’s service.

The capital occupies both walls of a narrow glacial valley beneath immense peaks. Residential terraces, workshops, reservoirs, protected gardens, transit routes, landing platforms, fortified gates, and defensive works are cut directly into the stone. Above them, a monumental assembly hall spans the valley at a scale conceived before the kingdom could justify it. The structure now performs the claim its builders intended: every route through the city rises toward a court larger than any single hold.

House Skarn’s crown controls the high ports, the Iron Stair, royal customs, armies, external prices, and every warrant issued in Othryn’s name. Mining houses retain their workings, wealth, household authority, and old privileges, but they may no longer bargain independently with Kharad. A hold arrives at Dorrath with its own Sealer to protect what it need not disclose and faces Assayers who test the declarations on which royal revenue depends.

The kingdom was built to prevent foreign contracts from acquiring Othryn one stronghold at a time. Dorrath embodies that settlement without erasing the houses beneath it. Their local power remains real inside mines, estates, and inherited privileges; the crown begins where ore, soldiers, roads, or agreements leave those bounds. Outsiders expecting several sovereign strongholds are still received courteously. They are no longer permitted to negotiate with them separately.

Identity and Function

Function

Dorrath houses the crown, royal administration, military coordination, customs authority, and the great hall to which Othryn’s holds and officers of its vassal Tharos are summoned. The fortified city also sustains habitation, reservoirs, protected gardens, workshops, trade, and defense within its glacial valley.

Identity and Function

Governance

House Skarn governs Othryn from Dorrath. The crown controls royal warrants, external trade, export prices, ore quotas, customs, high ports, armies, and the obligations owed by Tharos. Mining houses retain their workings, household authority, wealth, and old privileges, but cannot negotiate separate terms with Kharad. Royal appointees administer the capital beneath the crown.

Environment

Dorrath occupies both walls of a narrow glacial valley beneath immense peaks. A monumental assembly hall spans the valley above the inhabited levels, placing the royal seat physically between the holds it commands.

Travel Notes

Enter through the defended tunnels or narrow valley roads assigned to your approach. Wind, snow, landslides, and security closures can delay arrival, while routes crossing another holding may require passage to be settled before the final ascent. A summons to the great hall does not by itself open private workings, military platforms, or neighboring house territory.

Culture

The Twofold

A hold summoned to Dorrath brings a Sealer, preserving the distinction between refusing the crown’s question and lying in answer to it. Assayers attend each sitting because royal revenue depends on what the holds declare and the declaration must withstand scrutiny. Gloam also protects concealed routes and guarded deliberation; Dawn appears in public craftsmanship, defensive oaths, engineering, and the cooperation required to keep the valley habitable.
