Overview
The Record
Kalynd occupies several dark rocky islands where Avarra’s outer ocean offers neither the shelter nor the reflected light familiar to the inner seas. White-stone and terracotta districts stand behind curved storm barriers, linked by bridges, elevated docks, protected water courts, submersible pens, fisheries works, and navigation towers. Regulated lamps mark the channels between them and the open water.
The city-state’s work begins where easier routes end. Deep fisheries, pearl-catch, long-range navigation, submersible operations, and storm forecasting support a harbor whose crews routinely attempt passages inner-face pilots refuse after dark. Summoners reveal outer channels and Descriers read hazards beyond the lamp lines. Occulters keep the codes and routes that make those passages possible.
Kalynd shares wider charts and storm warnings with Talassar and receives access to broader lanes and defense. It retains its own harbor law, fees, fisheries, escorts, and local navigational knowledge. Visiting crews may be guided through a channel without gaining the right to record it, and a political closure can remain after the weather has cleared.
The same independence governs Kalynd’s place within Avarra. It may borrow the League’s common name for business abroad, but Bareth’s custody of that name gives Bareth no command over the harbor. Rivalry between the cities appears in fees, escorts, disputed routes, and commercial memory rather than war. Kalynd’s authority ends with its own water, and within that water it is exact.
Identity and Function
Function
Kalynd works deep fisheries and pearl-catch, forecasts outer-ocean storms, services watercraft and submersibles, trains long-range navigators, and guides traffic through channels many inner-sea pilots will not attempt after dark. Its harbor also connects those routes to wider Avarran and Talassaran lanes.

Environment
White-stone and terracotta districts occupy several dark volcanic islands in the outer ocean. Bridges, curved storm barriers, elevated docks, protected water courts, submersible pens, fisheries works, and navigation towers join the exposed rock. Strictly regulated lamps define safe channels through nights without the inner face’s reflected light.

Travel Notes
Approach only through the channel assigned by Kalynd and follow its lamp codes, storm instructions, and escort requirements exactly. Sudden weather can close the outer approaches without warning. A route may remain politically closed after conditions clear, especially to crews suspected of copying local charts, lamp sequences, or fishing grounds. Talassaran guidance does not waive Kalynd’s harbor law.
