Overview
The Record
Mareth Reach works a delta too broad to hold one shoreline. Cultivation beds, aquaculture basins, flooded orchards, research houses, markets, and processing halls stand on raised islands or floating platforms between channels as wide as seas elsewhere. Some districts surrender their lower levels to the seasonal flood. Others are dismantled and rebuilt where the water leaves useful ground.
Food, medicines, fibers, seeds, oils, and biological compounds arrive from the surrounding waterways. In Mareth they are tested, prepared, consolidated, and sealed for passage toward Verdant Gate and colder worlds that cannot reproduce them. The city’s wealth depends on living material remaining sound through every transfer, so cultivation, medicine, storage, and cargo handling form one continuous process rather than separate trades.
No central Varosi office directs that process. Growers, physicians, and loading houses answer through the communities that manage the delta, and the people who raised or prepared a consignment decide whether it may leave. Mareth can supply much of the Far Reach, but it cannot fix either its ground or its output in place. Continuity here is a harvest returned and a channel reopened, not a building left where the previous season put it.
Identity and Function
Function
Mareth combines aquaculture, medicinal cultivation, fiber and food processing, biological research, and cargo assembly across one shifting delta. River harvests arrive for testing and preparation; sealed consignments leave toward Verdant Gate and the wider Far Reach.
Identity and Function
Governance
Growers, physicians, and barge-loading houses govern the work through their own delta communities. Luravai issues no ordinary instructions here. The people responsible for a crop decide whether it may leave, so a rejected cargo has been refused by those who raised or prepared it rather than by a distant central inspector.
Environment and Travel
Environment
Braided tropical channels divide raised islands, floating cultivation beds, flooded orchards, managed wetlands, laboratories, covered markets, and stilted processing districts. Some neighborhoods move when the seasonal water changes; others allow their lower levels to flood, clear them afterward, and resume work above.

Travel Notes
Mareth is approached almost entirely by water. Marked commercial channels are dredged and revised, but a major flood can shift a route by several kilometers. Visitors pass biological screening when entering and leaving cultivation districts. Outbound cargo is inspected and sealed before it can continue toward Verdant Gate.
