Hereditary state service
The Shroud
Edrane acknowledges no such order
Edrane’s unlisted hereditary Occulter service, preserving concealed approaches that let state traffic use roads other powers cannot reliably chart.
The Shroud is Edrane’s unlisted hereditary Occulter service. Edrane acknowledges no department under the name, yet the work is organized through families whose posts, registers, and assigned approaches pass from parent to child. The service is funded and pensioned like a ministry while remaining absent from the public order of ministries at Eirenor.
Its asset is exclusive passage. Roads, gaps, and quiet approaches appear unusable to traffic not given the route, while Edrani vessels can be directed through them. A concealed way can protect movement more cheaply than a permanent squadron and gives the state leverage without requiring it to hold every approach by force.
The Shroud cannot make Edrane self-sufficient. Concealing a state route does not produce a safe path across changing debris, so the same government contracts Summoners to open convoy ways through the Shatter. The two services answer opposite needs and appear in public estimates under other descriptions. Neither grants its practitioners command of Ravelin, whose civil and navigation authorities still certify departures.
Succession is the service’s principal weakness. An approach may survive only in one family’s memory and in a register whose notation that family understands. Edrane has lost routes when a line ended and no successor could use the remaining notebook. Expanding access to those records would protect continuity but weaken the exclusive custody on which the Shroud’s value rests, and the service has consistently refused that reform.
The Twofold — Gloam
A route withheld is a route defended. The Shroud preserves exclusive approaches and declines to publish what it holds.
