Edrane

The Last Seat

A half-filled Major Moon of 620 million, preserving cities built for more than 1.5 billion while governing the Far Reach’s principal gateway.

Overview

The Record

Edrane was built for more than 1.5 billion people and holds about 620 million. Its planners laid out monumental cities, ceremonial avenues, transit lines, and residential districts for migration and commerce from the inner system. The Shattering came while the great works were rising and placed the Shatter between Edrane and the worlds those cities faced. Construction continued, but the expected population never arrived.

The occupied cities are dense and bright. Beyond them, completed districts stand sealed but maintained: pressure doors are tested, utilities run, monuments are cleaned, and stations open onto avenues that have never held a crowd. Public halls remain ready for institutions that were never founded, and transit lines continue into quarters with no ordinary traffic. Seen from above, the occupied cities appear as brilliant arms extending across the surface, with darker branches marking neighborhoods prepared for a population still three thousand years late.

The Senate governs from Eirenor, a council of ministers whose offices carry the rank and dignity of a peerage. The Ruling Minister stands first by precedence, not election, under an order fixed by the sequence in which ministries were created and never revised. No ministry has ever been formally dissolved. An office raised for an empty district may therefore outrank one directing an active port or convoy, leaving Edrane capable in administration and resistant to structural change for the same reason.

The unused city divides public life. Completionists would open, adapt, and settle the empty quarters. Dismantlers would recover their materials and rebuild for the population Edrane has. Preservationists hold that alteration would destroy the clearest surviving statement of what the moon intended to become. A quieter majority accepts the half-occupied world as permanent while continuing to fund its upkeep.

Edrane remains the political and cultural center of the Far Reach and its principal gateway from the Embrace. Its orbital stations were built for traffic that never came, leaving extraordinary excess capacity for repair, resupply, and transfer. The moon does not directly rule every outer settlement. Its authority rests instead on maintaining courts, convoys, observatories, archives, and approaches its neighbors still need and cannot readily replace.

Edrane is a sovereign Major Moon and one of the three principal Major Moons. Its courts, ministries, archives, observatories, ports, and convoy offices give it a coordinating role no outer rival has replaced. Koravel resents that influence and Varos depends upon it, though both remain independent.

Damaris is an Edrani protectorate. Its twilight settlements govern themselves while Edrane provides defense and represents them abroad. Marovar is governed directly from Eirenor. Vandor is neither: Rhovan protects it now, but Edrane never withdrew its claim. The precedence system has no means to abolish the responsible ministry, whose minister retains rank, staff, and office despite holding no present authority over Vandor. The ministry governing Marovar is an old office with work still to do.

Edrane’s practical reach follows charts, observatories, repair ports, and convoy lanes rather than annexation. Most organized traffic entering the Far Reach uses Edrani passage and facilities. That dependence gives Edrane leverage, but it does not make Koravel, Varos, or the protected communities ordinary Edrani territory.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter8,900 km
  • Mass0.37 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.76 g

Edrane has a breathable, relatively dry atmosphere at moderately low pressure. Cool inland seas, broad plateaus, cultivated river valleys, and arid expanses surround its cities. Ancient environmental works still regulate water, agriculture, and air quality across inhabited regions. Systems serving empty districts receive less attention, allowing drained channels, dry ceremonial grounds, and abandoned streets to cast pale dust over the monumental cities. Roads, canals, and transit corridors remain visible in deliberate geometry, with inhabited arms brightly lit and sealed outer districts kept dark but maintained.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order720
  • Orbital Radius11,800,000 km
  • Orbital Period151.2 days
  • Rotation31.6 hours
  • Inclination167.4 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.027

Edrane rotates every 31.6 standard hours and completes one retrograde orbit around Oranth every 151.2 standard days. It is not tidally locked, so Oranth rises and sets, while the reversed sky makes inner moons appear to drift in unfamiliar directions.

Most Shatter debris retains Kalemdil’s former prograde motion. Vessels crossing from the Embrace must wait for a calculated opening, shed that prograde motion, and match Edrane’s retrograde course. Edrani astronomers built calendars, charts, and navigation standards around the reversed sky. Those systems govern much of the Far Reach and differ from Velyrian standards, so vessels traveling between the regions carry Edrani and Velyrian calendars together. Confusing them can turn a safe approach into a fatal one.

Culture

The Twofold

Gloam is woven through Edrane’s archives, monuments, state ceremonies, and silent districts. Its practitioners keep abandoned quarters, sealed offices, and the records within them intact and closed.

The Shatter makes Edrane dependent upon the opposite tradition. Summoners reveal the passages by which its convoys reach the Embrace; Occulters conceal those same passages from hostile eyes and keep the charts within the state. Edrane pays one hand to find the road and the other to hide it.

Dawn has therefore found its strongest following among those who would reopen the empty cities, restore failing works, and give unfinished purposes new use. Much of Edrane’s public life turns on that division: whether the world entrusted to it must be preserved as it was built, or awakened into something its builders never intended.

Travel

Travel Notes

  1. Edrane is the principal gateway to the Far Reach. Most organized traffic from the Embrace crosses the Shatter in protected convoys, entering at a calculated opening before matching the retrograde motion of the outer moons. Failed transfers can strand a vessel among debris or send it toward Edrane at dangerous speed.

  2. Edrani ports and orbital stations were built for far more traffic than arrived. Their excess capacity makes the moon the region’s best-equipped repair, resupply, and transfer point, although some facilities remain unopened or serve only major convoys. Travel onward follows Edrani charts and retrograde calendars.

  3. Crossings are infrequent, expensive, and vulnerable to delay. Specialized crews and Summoners are highly valued for finding viable passage, while Occulters keep accepted routes from general circulation. Carry both Edrani and Velyrian reckoning, join the assigned convoy, and do not mistake unused capacity for an unscheduled crossing.
