Overview
The Record
The Sleeping Eye takes its name from an artificial circle buried in the center of a broad impact basin. Concentric layers rise through stone and accumulated debris, while radial passages extend beneath the crater floor beyond the sections reached by direct survey.
A sealed camp outside the detected boundary supports remote scans and surface teams. No confirmed entrance reaches the deepest layers, and landing above buried passages is prohibited because their roofs and internal voids remain poorly mapped.
No verified movement, signal, or change of state has been observed. The structure passes through darkness during each rotation, but instruments have not found a response tied to night. Its builders, age, and purpose remain unknown; descriptions of it as an observatory, weapon, gate, machine, or living entity are interpretations rather than findings.
Dawn and Gloam traditions read observation, awakening, dormancy, and concealment into the form without establishing a function. Temporary research agreements govern access but create no territorial claim. The Eye can be measured from its exposed edges; its deepest construction remains inaccessible.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Civilization Status
- Uninhabited
- Heraldic Standing
- No Unified Mark
The Sleeping Eye is unclaimed. Research teams operate under temporary agreements that govern camp safety, survey access, and custody of records without establishing territorial authority. No institution may convert maintenance of the camp into ownership of the moon or structure.
The circular form is sometimes reproduced as a scholarly symbol, but neither it nor any expedition mark is recognized as a crest.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter1,120 km
- Mass0.0003818 Earth masses
- Gravity0.05 g
The Sleeping Eye is airless. A small sealed survey camp stands beyond the circular structure’s outermost detectable boundary. Work inside the basin requires full vacuum protection, and no chamber within the structure has been confirmed habitable.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order865
- Orbital Radius16,650,000 km
- Orbital Period253.432 days
- Rotation29.8 hours
- Inclination12.6 degrees
- Eccentricity0.038
The Sleeping Eye rotates every 29.8 standard hours. The basin and circular structure pass through light and darkness during each rotation, but instruments have never confirmed a change in activity associated with either phase. Survey schedules follow thermal conditions and communication windows rather than an expected response.
Culture
The Twofold
Dawn interpretations emphasize observation, disclosure, and the possibility of awakening; Gloam interpretations emphasize dormancy and concealed purpose. Surveyors record those readings as cultural responses to the structure, not evidence of what it does or whether it can act.
Travel
Travel Notes
Obtain survey authorization and land at the marked camp beyond the structure’s detected boundary. Landing inside the circular works or directly above a buried radial passage is prohibited. Surface parties must register their route and remain outside exclusion zones established over unstable debris and unmapped subsurface voids.
