Overview
The Record
Ceryth makes Damaris’s habitable boundary into a city. It does not gather around a conventional center; it extends for many kilometers along the twilight rim, following the narrow ground where permanent daylight weakens before the frozen night. Dayward districts endure copper-orange light and dangerous heat. Nightward districts descend toward frost, indigo darkness, and permanent ice.
An enclosed transit spine and buried thermal conduits hold that long settlement together. Rail and roadway move lengthwise along the rim, keeping passengers and freight from drifting into either lethal extreme. Closely linked districts depend on the same heat, water, and protected route even when their local conditions differ. External arrivals use controlled landing facilities coordinated through Edrane, then transfer into this network under local direction.
The assembly of rim towns sits at Ceryth, where representatives of warmer and colder districts must jointly approve major decisions. A Kindler and a Cellarer occupy opposite sides of the assembly floor, and neither resolves the old question of which practice owns the middle ground. The procedure matters because every expansion, heat allocation, or interruption to transit affects both sides of the seam.
Edrane maintains diplomatic, convoy, and defensive offices in the city and represents Damaris in major external agreements. It does not govern the rim’s internal affairs. Ceryth is therefore both the protectorate’s point of contact with outside power and the mechanism by which its settlements remain self-governing: a city whose geography makes shared rule unavoidable.
