Kalemdil

The Moon That Was

The destroyed red moon whose remains form the Shatter; its lost institutions and disputed catastrophe made the Binding a lasting law of travel and salvage.

Overview

The Record

Kalemdil was a densely settled red moon whose cold deserts, rocky highlands, shallow seas, and engineered basins supported a civilization built on science and industry. Research complexes, manufacturing centers, and weapons-testing territories occupied regions closed even to some of the moons financing the work. Its ordinary environment was habitable; its institutions were not open.

In 1 A.S., about three thousand years ago, the moon broke apart and became the Shatter, the debris band now dividing the Embrace from the Far Reach. The destruction is confirmed. Its cause is not. Natural collision, failure within an experimental weapons program, unnamed war, and deliberate destruction all remain argued positions, supported by records too incomplete, contradictory, or interested to settle the matter.

The Binding, whose prohibition on borrowed force still governs weapons law, passage, and salvage throughout the system, was written in response. Every enforcement decision made under it carries an implied judgment about Kalemdil, though the signatories have never agreed on which judgment.

The larger fragments still hold ruined laboratories, preserved settlements, industrial works, and testing sites. Salvagers, sanctioned researchers, pilgrims, and political agents enter under permits disputed by Aurel and Velyr and unrecognized by Edrane. No recovered document has established the cause of the Shattering. Some conclude that none survived. Others conclude that the absence was arranged.

Civilization Status
Abandoned

Kalemdil has no government and no sovereign authority over its remains. Access is governed instead by overlapping permit regimes. Aurel and Velyr, whose Embrace ports stage many crossings, dispute what may be removed and who may certify a find; Velyrian archives treat surviving records as an extension of their own holdings. Edrane coordinates organized traffic on the far side and keeps several approaches as guarded state knowledge without recognizing Embrace permits. The Binding prohibits salvage bearing on weapons work, placing many of the most valuable sites outside lawful examination. Serath periodically calls for a joint inquiry, but no power willing to demand one has been willing to open all of its own archives in return.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter12,200 km
  • Mass0.84 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.92 g

Before the Shattering, Kalemdil had a dry, breathable atmosphere at pressure slightly below that of the largest inhabited moons. Iron-rich dust colored the surface red and turned regional storms copper, while cold deserts, rocky highlands, shallow seas, and engineered agricultural basins supported a stable biosphere and extensive settlement. Manufacturing and testing regions required heavy filtration and environmental control. Kalemdil now has no coherent atmosphere: gas and vapor were dispersed, captured by nearby bodies, or frozen onto fragments, whose exposed surfaces are vacuum.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order600
  • Orbital Radius8,400,000 km
  • Orbital Period90.81 days
  • Rotation28.8 hours
  • Inclination0.64 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.008

Before the Shattering, Kalemdil rotated once every 28.8 standard hours and orbited Oranth every 90.81 standard days. It was not tidally locked, so Oranth crossed the sky, and the slight orbital inclination made eclipses less frequent than on the inner moons. Astronomical calendars combined the local rotation, the orbit around Oranth, and the changing alignment of Vya and Veo. No unified cycle survives. Fragments now rotate at different rates along related orbits near Kalemdil’s former path; some retain recognizable surface sections, while others tumble through the field.

Culture

The Twofold

Kalemdil’s institutions treated the Twofold as both practical work and an object of experiment. Summoners served navigation programs, and Descriers worked in materials research; at least one institution retained a Sealer, though no surviving record states what it was meant to seal. Whether any Twofold practice contributed to the Shattering remains unresolved. No fragment has produced a Dawn or Gloam effect that a surveyor was willing to certify. Salvage crews still tell of places where something answers, but none of those accounts has survived examination.

Travel

Travel Notes

Kalemdil has no surviving port and no stable surface destination. The Shatter occupies its former orbit, and routes move among fragments, concealed ruins, collision debris, and regions still poorly charted. Crossings require a vessel equipped for debris hazards, an experienced crew, and current route information; Summoners are valuable because they can reveal temporary passages ordinary navigation does not show. Salvage parties also need a permit accepted by the authority controlling their point of departure. The Binding prohibits recovery connected to weapons work, while Aurel, Velyr, and Edrane do not recognize the same permissions. A permit that opens one approach may close another.
