The Record
Gilt yields precious, highly conductive metals valued for delicate instruments, medical equipment, precision machinery, corrosion-resistant bearings, and court ornament. Few mines produce material so useful and so readily converted into wealth. Every stage from recovery to refined export is therefore controlled more tightly than the volume alone would require.
Its 21,000 workers live in sealed quarters joined to mines, assay halls, and protected transfer rooms. Exterior recovery is largely remote, while supervised crews handle repairs and material that cannot be trusted to an unattended machine. Shifts, assays, contract reviews, and export windows run on Velyrian commercial time. Metallic dust is kept away from both machinery and refined stock, because contamination can diminish the value of an otherwise successful cut.
Gilt is a concession under a Velyrian imperial charter, one of the holdings described by The Charters of the High Seat. Velyrian commercial houses finance extraction and exert influence through contracts, but they do not govern the mines directly. Their papers can determine which work receives funding and when a consignment moves. They do not turn contractual weight into ownership of every gallery or command of its crews.

Mines, assay halls, and crew quarters are sealed against radiation and fine metallic dust, which can foul machinery and contaminate refined material. Most exterior work is performed remotely, with crews venturing outside only for repairs and closely supervised recovery operations.

Gilt is tidally stabilized with its long axis held toward Oranth, leaving the giant fixed above its inner face. Sunrise and sunset follow the moon’s long orbit, but little of that cycle reaches the buried workings. Mine shifts, assays, and export schedules run instead on Velyrian commercial time.
